Postpartum visits: recovery of body and mind

Postpartum care is an ongoing process, adapted to your birth experience, symptoms and medical conditions.

English key-point edition · Content updated 2026-10-12

This guide summarizes the main points of our Chinese article. Confirm your personal test preparation and treatment instructions with the clinical team.

Recovery and individual tests

The team reviews discharge and bleeding, pain, uterine recovery, wounds, urination and bowel function. Perineal or cesarean wounds may need assessment. Pregnancy-related hypertension, diabetes and anemia need follow-up after birth. Blood tests and scans depend on the situation rather than a universal package.

Pelvic floor symptoms

Urine leakage, a dragging sensation or pain during sex are worth discussing. Note timing, frequency and effects on daily life, and ask about assessment, rehabilitation and a comfortable return to activity.

Feeding and emotional wellbeing

Ask for support with breast or nipple pain, feeding difficulties, fever or redness. Milk supply is not a measure of your worth. Persistent or worsening low mood, anxiety, loss of interest or difficulty caring for yourself deserve help.

Contraception and future pregnancy

Ovulation may occur before the first period returns, and breastfeeding does not provide reliable contraception in every situation. Discuss a method suited to feeding, medical history, preferences and future pregnancy plans.

Warning symptoms needing urgent assessment

Bleeding that soaks one or more pads in an hour, trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, severe headache or vision changes, severe abdominal pain, fever of 38°C or above, or marked one-sided leg swelling or pain need prompt assessment. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, ask a trusted person to stay with you and seek emergency help. For severe symptoms in Taiwan, call 119 and tell staff you recently gave birth.
