This guide summarizes the main points of our Chinese article. Confirm your personal test preparation and treatment instructions with the clinical team.
Timing and booking
Kuang Tien's patient information generally places the detailed scan at 20–24 weeks, by appointment. Ask at an earlier prenatal visit rather than waiting until the end of this window. Your history or earlier findings may lead to a different schedule or additional tests.
What is examined?
The scan looks at visible structures such as the brain, skull, spine, face, lips, limbs, heart views, stomach, kidneys, bladder and abdominal wall. Measurements, the placenta and amniotic fluid are assessed according to the examination. Its purpose is more than finding out the baby's sex.
Preparing for the appointment
Bring your maternity handbook and earlier ultrasound and chromosome screening or diagnostic reports. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and confirm the arrival time and fee. Follow instructions about bladder filling or other preparation; do not assume fasting is needed. Allow some flexibility because the baby's position may require a break or another visit.
What a normal scan cannot guarantee
Visibility depends on gestational age, fetal position and other imaging factors. The scan cannot rule out every small abnormality, problem that develops later, genetic or chromosomal condition, or future developmental problem. A structure that has not been clearly seen is not yet confirmed normal or abnormal.
If follow-up is recommended
Ask which structure needs another look and when. Further care may involve fetal medicine review, repeat ultrasound, genetic counseling or diagnostic testing. Keep the report and images for your next appointment.
